The Eye of the Tiger

People often ask me about why my business has succeeded where others have failed. We’re a privately-funded 2003 startup and still hold 90% of the company in an industry where market share is bought (and ownership diluted) with venture and angel cap. Here we are, 12 years later, still playing and winning against the largest entertainment company in the world.

I usually answer something like, “We’re still here because we didn’t quit.” Sound too good to be true? It’s not.

Today, while on my morning walk, headphones in, pop music keeping me moving quickly, and getting my head clear, this song came on:

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire

‘Cause I am the champion and you’re gonna hear me roar

Louder, louder than a lion

‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar

I sat with 350 CEO’s and Executive leaders last week at the Arizona Vistage Summit, and as I met people who do something similar to what I do every day, I felt powerful, surrounded by other people who have one thing in common – we believe we can do what we do.

Hear us roar.

Those lyrics speak to those of us who lead. There’s no time for fear, self-doubt and questioning. Looks like confidence? Leadership? Call it what you want – for me – it’s the eye of the tiger. I can because I believe I can.

Women and men alike who are born leaders find this comes naturally – and if you do, let it be what drives you every day and success will find you.

Most of us have to summon it. Many days, I wake up early with a knot in my stomach and unreasonable fearful thoughts. What the hell am I doing? I’m tasked with growing a company in a market with crazy variables and consolidation isn’t coming quickly enough – so competition is fierce. Add not one – but two new ventures in 2016.

Up. Coffee. Silence the fear and doubt. Am I scared? Sometimes. Do I live there? Nope.

Why am I successful in business? A secret? Just not quitting? I have a new answer. Because I think I can. I have the #bestteaminticketing because I believe I do – and now, so do they.

Change the song in your head – change the way you think – and you’re there.

Now I’m floating like a butterfly

Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes

I went from zero, to my own hero

  1. And if you let it, your up-creeping age can also be a fear factor…I’m learning about that one right now. Belief…faith…that we can do what we do in spite of the hurdles and setbacks is key.
Someone long ago said, “”My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” And the guy who said that changed the world in spite of his limitations.
